Studies show that physical activity in natural environments increases mental health more than exercising inside. Enjoy being active in nature with these ideas.

  • Explore your worksite. Find appealing places to walk during breaks. Schedule walking meetings outdoors. Or gather your colleagues for a few yoga stretches outside.

  • Check out your local recreation area. Look for safe, marked walking routes and heated outdoor pools.

  • Take a hike. Investigate a new trail — and enjoy varying your routine. Be mindful of your surroundings and, for added safety, walk in a group.

  • Locate a walking tour. Exercise, socialize, and learn something.

  • Join a sports team. You’ll be active outside while feeling encouraged by social support.

  • Get your loved ones involved. Designate a regular time when everyone can be active together. In addition to walking after dinner, plan a ski trip or camping excursion.

Strive for 30 minutes of walking, five days a week plus other activities — with plenty of fresh air.
