While all fruit is good for you, it comes in many shapes and sizes. To maximize flavor and nutrition, pay attention to these fruit factors the next time you go shopping:

  • Thick or thin? The type of skin on your fruit dictates how long it will keep on your counter. So a good rule of thumb is to eat thin-skinned items such as plums and peaches before fruits with thicker skins, such as bananas and mangos.

  • Timing is everything. Blueberries are likely to taste better in July and August than in January. Depending on the time of year, the fruit you choose may have to travel across the country before it gets to your table. By buying in season, you support the environment and get a fresher product with higher nutrient levels. Citrus fruits, such as navel oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines, are great choices in March.

  • Fresh or dried? Dried fruit, while still a healthy choice, is much higher in calories and sugar than fresh fruit. Some dried fruits, such as dried cranberries, have added sugar as well. If watching your weight, enjoy fruits such as dried apples and raisins in moderation.

Spend a little more time in the produce section this weekend and pick out a new fruit to try. Remember, different colors mean a variety of nutrients.
