Healthy frozen treats - Tuesday, January 14
You can enjoy revitalizing walks and healthy frozen treats during the warm days of early summer. “On hot days, try cooling and refreshing frozen fruits… like bananas and strawberries. Add a drizzle of chocolate and freeze… yummy,” says Maritess Gadams, assistant manager, Health Education, Northern California Region.
Next time you’re tempted to dig into a waffle cone filled with your favorite ice cream, consider these healthier alternatives to tantalize your taste buds:
Choose frozen yogurt. It’s lower in fat and calories than ice cream. Keep in mind, however, that most frozen yogurts tend to be high in sugar, so look for low-sugar varieties. For a refreshing treat, enjoy frozen yogurt with fresh fruit on top.
Add fruit. Dip frozen bananas in dark chocolate. Or, make your own custard by blending frozen peeled bananas with low-fat milk, and topping it with a dollop of peanut butter, sliced strawberries and honey, or dark chocolate chips.
Try Italian ice. Made from juice, water, and sugar, this is yet another cooling — but also fat-free and lower-calorie — treat.
Freeze fruit. Try freezing fresh grapes or blueberries to create a healthy cooling treat.
Puree watermelon. Then freeze it in Popsicle trays for a refreshing frozen juice bar.
Make smoothies. Combine low-fat plain yogurt, frozen berries, honey, ice, and low-fat milk. For a tangy froth, add orange juice, peaches, or pineapple instead of berries. Blend papaya, kiwi, or mango for a more exotic twist.
With these fun ideas, you can tantalize your taste buds and enjoy low-calorie, healthy fruits.
