Walking regularly and eating a healthy diet are key strategies for promoting good health. On the healthy eating front, vitamin B9, or folic acid, as it’s commonly known, takes center stage for its role in preventing birth defects, heart attacks, strokes, and colorectal cancer. This star nutrient is found in many foods. Here are some delicious ways to pack your diet with more folate:

  • Top it off. Cap your cereal with ripe blackberries, sliced strawberries, or chunks of papaya.

  • Toss it in. Mix your salad with fresh spinach leaves, romaine lettuce, and red bell peppers. Or try this recipe for Asian spinach salad with mandarin oranges and avocado.

  • Stir it up. Create a delicious stir-fry with cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, peas, and sweet potatoes.

  • Give it color. Build a florid fruit salad with cantaloupe, honeydew, oranges, and sunflower seeds.

  • Sprinkle it in. Add beans to your soup, salad, or entree. White, black, lima, and kidney beans are high sources of folate — providing at least 20 percent of the daily value per serving.

Add more folate to your diet with these delicious ideas.
