Great outdoors - Tuesday, January 21
“It’s a beautiful day!” says Alma Munoz, medical assistant, Hawaii Region. “Can’t wait to get out there and do my daily walk/jog during my lunch hour and after work!”
Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week forms the cornerstone of your fitness routine. The warm weather also provides adventurous opportunities to expand your fitness repertoire:
Hiking. Consistent walking/hiking has been linked with lower rates of heart disease, increased bone density, and diabetes prevention. Be sure to let someone know where you’re going or take along a companion. Choose a safe, well-groomed path and remain aware of your surroundings. Remember to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your excursion.
Cycling. For cardiovascular gains, try biking. Visit specialty shops for help on picking the right bicycle for your fitness level and aspirations. Then find designated paths or cycling clubs. Consider riding to work.
Water sports. Kayaking, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and kite boarding are strength and fitness boosters. Or take to the pool — swimming can efficiently build strength without hurting joints.
Summer is just around the corner… and that means many ways to stay fit while having fun.
