Walking regularly and healthy snacking are two important strategies for promoting better health. “In our office, we have days where everyone brings in fresh veggies and fruit,” says Tiffaney Robinson, schedule coordinator, Northern California Region. “It is very nice not having to worry about snacks because everyone is pitching in! Way to go, team!”

In the fast-paced hustle of daily life, hitting up the vending machine may seem easier than tossing a veggie salad. Make healthy eating easier at work with a healthy kitchen — or desk — makeover:

  • Pack produce to go. Store grapes, cherries, or berries in grab bags to snag on your way out the door. Pack cucumber slices, baby carrots, celery sticks, or bell-pepper strips the same way, along with cheese squares or string cheese and whole-wheat crackers. Keep apples, bananas, pears, or oranges handy at your desk or in a staff refrigerator.

  • Stockpile snacks. Keep baggies of unsweetened cereal, nuts, or dried fruit at work for when you’re hungry but in a hurry.

  • Remove soda from your fridge. Drink water in its place, adding lemon or cucumber slices for flavor.

These simple changes can makeover your kitchen and your diet. You can also engage your team in healthy eating at work with the B.Y.O.S. (Build Your Own Salad) toolkit. Each person brings one ingredient and then everyone can enjoy a healthy, delicious salad.
