Walk to keep cholesterol in check - Thursday, February 06
There are two types of cholesterol, and abnormal levels of either one may lead to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week helps improve lipid profiles for both types:
Good. Physical activity has been found to boost HDL, the “good” cholesterol that cleans arteries.
Bad. Exercise helps reduce excess body weight, which is linked with high LDL (“bad cholesterol”) that clogs arteries and increases diabetes risk.
Daily walks can help keep cholesterol at proper levels for good health. Knowing your cholesterol numbers, as well as blood pressure and BMI, is also a key to good health. If you’re a KP member, you can view most lab results via My Health Manager on kp.org. The Total Health Assessment online questionnaire can help you see how you’re doing, from eating a heart-healthy diet to managing stress. In just 20 to 30 minutes, you can find out what you’re doing well, and areas where you’re poised to make a healthy change.
